Firefox 3 support on Twitter!?

My previous post on Firefox 3 problems I’ve been facing also seeped into my twitter posts, which yielded amazing results.Incase you’re having problems with firefox 3 then there is support available from Mozilla (hypothesizing here..) on twitter.Just twitter your query to firefox_answers and you should have a solution on the way may be in 3 days at the most! I’ve heard on twit that Comcast provides such a support service, but this is the first time I’m experiencing it ;-) May be twitter would become a solid help platform second to call centers!

TIP: you can follow firefox_answers and pickup a treasure trove of tips, tricks from the converstions/complaints on twitter

Quartz PDF plugin for Firefox

firefox-mac-pdf.png

If your job involves dealing with PDFs on a daily basis, then here is a tip for Mac users (only)!

Yes, I know you love safari and that it’s a very elegant browser which loads up pdfs on the fly with Preview but then I’m sure that there are enough firefox users out there who would like things to work the same way in their world too. The wait is over with the Quartz PDF plugin which is a mac only extension/addon for firefox that makes pdf handling just the breeze it is in safari. It just makes me forget that I’m working with firefox (provided you’re running the appropriate theme ;-) Do yourselves a favour and get rid of that pdf download plugin!

Firefox 3 on the Mac

Picture 2.png

I was pretty much jazzed up about the release of firefox 3, my time with the pre-release version of the browser was pretty nice. I’ve downloaded firefox 3 and been using the final release version for a few days now. The browser is fast and i haven’t seen the ugly memory leak feature/bug so far. However there are two problems that I’ve come across that i did not notice in the pre-release version.

Occasionally when i try to minimize my browser window, it keeps popping back up! And
shortcut keys do not work intermittently, command+L, command+K are the most affected out of the shortcuts. Has anybody come across any similar problems, i wonder if it is a bug or whether Leopard 10.5.3 doesn’t play well with firefox 3!

Blogo - The Mars edit Alternative?

I am fan of Mars Edit, because it simple and gets the job done perfectly.Too bad it costs a little more than what i can afford for a blogging client.I’ve been on the look out for an alternative to Marsedit for a while now and ended up with Blogo. To start out let me say - No blogo is not considerably cheaper than Mars edit, atleast for a student like me :-( But i am just throwing this post up to reflect my opinion of Blogo.

Blogo is one of those apps that just be looking at the screenshots you could fall in love with.

The best thing i like about Blogo other than its cool interface is its very soothing appeal and no nonsense get it done interface, which are all very typical to msot Cool Mac apps ;-) One should have no problems with the features, it does pretty much all that you can ask for, like allows adding images and resizing them for your blog posts, integration with most popular blogging platforms like WordPress, Blogger etc. There are some well thought of features like word, character count - which one wouldn’t need in the case of a blog but its just there if you need it.There’s a full screen editing option that gives sort of Write Room experience which i love - undistracted blogging perfect!

somethings that i miss, or rather am getting used to doing differently are

  1. Categories: categories are provided as sort of tags.
  2. Spellcheck missing…Ooops! isn’t that a blaring omission..i mean typos do “happn” dont they?
  3. Considering that Marsedit is such a strong competition, i would expect blogo to be priced more competetively.

Blogo has a lot of potential to knockout Marsedit, especially with that awesome interface that’s hard to resist.I am sure that the disadvantages that I’ve listed above are pretty minor (expect the spellcheck, if i may say so) which would probably be fixed in their next version.I’ll add this to my “probably might buy” list of software.

PS: This post was created with Blogo.

Language - Bane or Boon to Research

Language & research
Monolingualism in Research - probably you haven’t thought of it much (i hadn’t given it much thought either..)

Little has been done to assess the impact of monolingualism in science, let alone deal with it, but a session at the AAAS meeting in February at least laid out the issues. The participants in that panel have been kind enough to supply me with their slides, which can be accessed at www.the-scientist.com/languagebarrier.

May be its time you see what the fuss is all about.

So What’s Twitter?…duh!

So i send out some invites to my friends to join this really cool “thing” called twitter. Well so what’s that is the reply i get! Think this should help (them/me).

Oh by the way that is pretty cool presentation! thanks to Presentation Zen to pointing it out….my first impression of Common Craft - impressive.

“We use video and paper to make complex ideas easy to understand. We present subjects ‘in plain English’ using short, unique and understandable videos in a format we call Paperworks.”

Question is would this work on much more “not so simple” things? (ya i sure would like an academic presentation like this!…ya i know I’m crazy)

Bleezer

Bleezer is what i would term as

Poor man’s Mars edit

Yes it contains all basic requirements for a blogging client and gets the job done.It contains the most important formatting features, ability to insert media, allows preview of your post and seemlessly connects with several blogging paltforms.

TED 2008 - Jill Bolte Taylor: Neuroanatomist

I woke up this morning and was synching my ipod with my computer when i noticed that there was a TED talk by a neuroanatomist on my podcast subscription, being a biology student i was curious to check it out immediately ( remembering the a previous interesting talk by a neuroscientist). For twenty minutes i was in a state of …. well i can’t sort of describe it perfectly - this is one of the best talks that I’ve listened to with so much attention that i was oblivious to what was happening around. I would definitely recommend this talk to anybody and everybody.
